Rules, rules, rules. More than 40,000 rules in the form of laws passed in 2011 became active today at the local, state, and federal level. There are rules on what a person can say in a commercial (and fine print telling us about the rules about what they said). But when it comes to human interaction no one bothered to write them down. This little blog is my attempt to record those rules.
Here’s an experience I want you to have. Find a person who has never tasted salt. Then try to describe to them what it tastes like. People say things like, “It’s not sweet, but it’s not sour.” ”It’s like seawater but without the water and not so brackish.” We all know what it tastes like but it’s hard to describe the flavor without describing it in terms of like, not, more, or less. Describing the unwritten rules is a lot like describing what salt tastes like.
Shall we begin?
